about

The esteemed improvisational chainsaw blues trio of Young James Long is back after a 16-year hiatus, and is finally releasing an album. Hell hath frozen over.

If you missed out on the earlier days of this band, now’s your chance to get in the game. They will release their first ever full-length album, Orogeny, on October 6th 2023 via Wrong Speed Records(UK/EU)/Learning Curve Records(US). The album contains a whopping 17 songs, none of which are over 4 minutes. In fact most of the songs are under two minutes. These guys have distilled their craft down to its most primal and lethal elements. They don’t want to waste your time, or more importantly, theirs.

Young James Long was birthed in some form in 2003, but these folks have known each other since the mid-90s. PW Long was still kicking around with Mule, but thinking about a solo career and his future as P.W. Long with Reelfoot, Kirkland James was playing with his band Tenderloin (and later with Alejandro Escovedo), and Taylor Young was just a lad, not yet playing with Hi-Fi Drowning, Young Heart Attack or The Polyphonic Spree.

Originally a Dallas band, the summer of 2003 was spent doing a legendary weekly residency at their local dive, Muddy Waters. Any other band would have taken the show on the road from there, but one of the members left Texas and the others, being the shockingly talented musicians they are, were perpetually wooed away to play in other bands, but not before they recorded the You Ain’t Know The Man EP with their friend, and eventual Grammy winner, Stuart Sikes. The EP came out via Southern Records in 2007, and thanks to the tasteful ears of the people across the pond, a European tour followed.

You may notice that it’s now 2023, and 16 years have passed. What happened? Long quit playing music for 13 years, James picked up a bass and started touring with country bands, and Young kept touring with other folks and continued to make his own music. Oh, and while they began talking about playing together in 2020, the world of course had other plans. Finally, in the summer of 2021 they made their very first full-length album.

The album came together thanks to these 16 years – you gotta figure that some songs and some riffs had been germinating in the guy’s heads, and indeed they were. PW brought in some tracks he wrote – so I guess he didn’t really “quit” playing music….suspicious. There were some scraps from the earlier EP that were worthy of building on, and more were conjured up on the spot. Half of the album was recorded back in 2004 by their old pal, Stuart Sikes, and the other half was recorded in 2021 by J. Michael Smith at his Sunland Sound studio in East Dallas, who also mixed the entire thing. Slovenian bluesman Niko Novak played bass on the song “In There”.
